Library & Information Science

Learn how to be an information ninja! Library and Information Science will prepare you to be a more successful student with the option of pursuing a career as an information professional.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

If you like finding the truth, solving puzzles, and helping people, then Library and Information Science (LIS) might be for you! LIS professionals do much more than check out books. In fact, there are multiple career paths requiring different levels of education. Students may use their coursework immediately by working as a Library Assistant or Technologist. Students wishing to pursue a career as a librarian or professor of LIS will need a Master’s in LIS. Librarians do not just work in libraries, they may also have a specialization and work in museums, law firms, hospitals, large corporations or universities. Become a library professional and help people find the information they need!

Library courses help all students obtain the essential research skills required to be successful. In particular, transfer students will be expected to be ready to conduct their own research using library databases and credible online sources.

Transfer Options

LIB 10: Introduction to Information Literacy and Research, LIB 11: Introduction to Electronic Databases and LIB 20H: Advanced Research and Information Competency are all UC and CSU transferable. Students planning to transfer to a 4-year college are highly encouraged to enroll in a library course. All transfer students will be expected to know how to conduct research and properly cite their sources. Students wishing to prepare for a career in Library and Information Science, may obtain an undergraduate degree in any discipline prior to starting graduate work for a Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) at an American Libraries Association (ALA) accredited university. There are a number of online programs, the largest in California is at San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). Both UCLA and USC offer in-person masters degrees in Information Science.

Program Specific Support

Research librarians are available to provide individual and group student support that includes personalized research assistance, evaluating sources for credibility and citation formatting.

Your Support Team

Your success is our priority! Whether you are just starting, in the middle of, or completing your time at IVC, we have a team of people in your corner to help keep you on-track to reach your goals at IVC and beyond!

Program Length

Four semesters.

Transfer Options

A student who follows this course of study will be ready to transfer to any UC, CSU, many out-of-state colleges and universities, and private institutions. IVC has transfer agreements with UCI (TAG), UCLA (TAP) and CSUs (AA-T).

Program Specific Support

A student taking a language course will have access to free in-person tutoring in Japanese, Sign Language, and Spanish, and free online tutoring in Spanish. Additionally, students may have opportunities to participate in on campus clubs and conversational groups.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology is the study of the human body as it relates to movement.  Sports, recreation, medicine, health and nutrition are all founded on the fundamental principles discovered in the study of Kinesiology.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Kinesiology is an integrative discipline that focuses on the various components and processes of human movement related to physical activity and sport, incorporating the areas of human anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, biochemistry, biomechanics, psychology, history and sociology. Students then apply these skills and are introduced to topics related to exercise such as the physiology of the body, nutrition, injury prevention, and health enhancement. The program serves all students, regardless of age, fitness level, or previous experience. Activity classes are designed not only to provide for physiological and skills development but also to educate students about the principles involved in this diverse and useful area of study.

Program Length

In consultation and cooperation with the Kinesiology programs of the California State Universities (CSUs), the AA-T in Kinesiology can be completed in four fulltime semesters. Students should work with an IVC Counselor on building their Individual Education Plan, but sample schedules can be found in the Kinesiology Major’s Handbook.

Transfer Options

The AA-T in Kinesiology is among only 23 degrees at IVC that guarantee admission to the CSU system.  In addition, IVC has a transfer agreement to the premier local private school program in the discipline at Chapman University, while the AA-T is also recognized by the rapidly growing program at Concordia University and is considered favorably in the application process at UC Irvine for those interested in their B.S. in Exercise Science.

Your success is our priority! Whether you are just starting, in the middle of, or completing your time at IVC, we have a team of people in your corner to help keep you on-track to reach your goals at IVC and beyond!

Film and Digital Media

Film and Digital Media is a fitting major for students interested in careers in the film industry, media-related work in other fields, fine art film production, media studies education, and researching and writing media studies scholarship.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Film and Digital Media studies is an interdisciplinary program that combines film studies Humanities-based courses with Digital Media curriculum in The Arts. This AA degree prepares students for further studies in film, media studies, or related majors (such as Mass Communication or Digital Media Production). By combining the two areas of study, students will acquire contextual knowledge that will enhance media production, as well as vital production skills to support further work in media studies scholarship and criticism.

Film studies coursework introduces students to film history, formal film analysis, film and media theories, social and cultural representation, media convergence, and numerous other topics. Digital Media Art courses provide foundations in photography, video production, visual storytelling, experimental film production, and many more. We recommend beginning with FILM 40 (Mass Media & Society), FILM 71 (Introduction to Film Studies), and DMA 70 (Digital Video Production), but students are encouraged to view the catalog description and list of required courses.

Transfer Options

IVC’s Film and Digital Media AA is designed to mirror lower-division coursework in programs available at most UC and CSU campuses. Students completing this degree will have the knowledge base and production skills to begin Junior and Senior-level coursework, and beyond.

Your Support Team

Your success is our priority! Whether you are just starting, in the middle of, or completing your time at IVC, we have a team of people in your corner to help keep you on-track to reach your goals at IVC and beyond!
