Humanities

If you think English is only about grammar, think again! In English classes, you can expect to study humanity through reading and analyzing texts and through producing your own writing to develop strong skills in communication, critical thinking, and empathy--all essential for human development and hot commodities in any job market.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Many employers are seeking people who can think critically and express messages clearly in today’s workforce. A Literature and/or Creative Writing major will foster these skills with practice in critical thinking, analysis, expression, and exploration of diverse voices in writing. In Literature, students will gain a foundation in close reading and discussing major themes within novels, poems, plays, speeches, works of non-fiction, and other texts. In Creative Writing, students have the opportunity to study and compose primary texts, building their own portfolio of work. Studying Literature and Creative Writing often catapults individuals to careers in marketing, law, public relations, teaching, journalism, information science, and a variety of other fields.

Program Length

On average, if a student attends full time, they are able to complete these programs within two years.

Transfer Options

The English literature major at IVC offers lower-division coursework — including survey courses, genre-based courses, and specialized topics — that prepares students for the critical and literary analysis that they will engage in after transfer to a four-year institution.

The English creative writing major offers an opportunity to learn about and practice the craft of various genres--creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and screenwriting--with published writers, as well as an opportunity to experience the world of publishing through work on our literary journal, The Ear.

IVC English majors have transferred to UCs, CSUs, and private colleges such as Chapman and USC.

Program Specific Support

The Writing Center is both a beautiful on-campus space for completing academic work and an online platform where students can meet one-on-one with professors to discuss their writing in a friendly, supportive environment.

Film and Digital Media

Humanities

Film and Digital Media is a fitting major for students interested in careers in the film industry, media-related work in other fields, fine art film production, media studies education, and researching and writing media studies scholarship.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Film and Digital Media studies is an interdisciplinary program that combines film studies Humanities-based courses with Digital Media curriculum in The Arts. This AA degree prepares students for further studies in film, media studies, or related majors (such as Mass Communication or Digital Media Production). By combining the two areas of study, students will acquire contextual knowledge that will enhance media production, as well as vital production skills to support further work in media studies scholarship and criticism.

Film studies coursework introduces students to film history, formal film analysis, film and media theories, social and cultural representation, media convergence, and numerous other topics. Digital Media Art courses provide foundations in photography, video production, visual storytelling, experimental film production, and many more. We recommend beginning with FILM 40 (Mass Media & Society), FILM 71 (Introduction to Film Studies), and DMA 70 (Digital Video Production), but students are encouraged to view the catalog description and list of required courses.

Transfer Options

IVC’s Film and Digital Media AA is designed to mirror lower-division coursework in programs available at most UC and CSU campuses. Students completing this degree will have the knowledge base and production skills to begin Junior and Senior-level coursework, and beyond.

Your success is our priority! Whether you are just starting, in the middle of, or completing your time at IVC, we have a team of people in your corner to help keep you on-track to reach your goals at IVC and beyond!

History

Humanities

History courses teach students the necessary skills to evaluate and interpret complex information and recognize the importance of the past in contemporary society. These skills allow students to better understand complex political and social organizations, appreciate cultural diversity and recognize the value of an equitable society.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

As part of the history major, students are required to take courses in American history and world history as well as study the populations of historically underrepresented minorities. Students will have the opportunity to study with professors who specialize in political, economic, cultural, intellectual, and/or social history. Students who are interested in careers in government, public policy, journalism, law, education (K-12 and higher education), and non-profit work might consider majoring in history, as the skills learned in this discipline support skills necessary for continued graduate study or occupations related to the above areas.

Students interested in history may take a variety of courses in US, European, and world history. Additionally, courses in women's history, Californian history, and Chicanx history are offered. Students will learn about political, social, intellectual, economic, and cultural histories. In studying the historical past, students will improve their academic writing, academic literacy, and interpretation of complex information, skills which are transferable across all disciplines and careers.

Transfer Options

All of the courses in the history program at Irvine Valley College have been designed for a transfer model to area UCs, CSUs, and private colleges. Each course offered is accepted by all UC and CSUs and most of the core required courses in our local degrees articulate as major requirements in neighboring programs. The high standards and rigor of these courses will prepare students to excel in upper division history courses.

Program Specific Support

Students may enroll in a humanities and social science writing center course for support with academic writing in history. Students may also sign up for course specific tutoring in the Student Success Center.

Ethnic Studies

Humanities

Interested in understanding the origins of race and racism in American society? Interested in how we as a society can strive for racial and social justice for all? Ethnic Studies is the interdisciplinary study of race and ethnicity, as understood through the perspectives of major underrepresented racial groups in the United States.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Ethnic Studies is the study of race and ethnicity with a focus on the experiences of people of color within the United States in history up to the present. By looking at the role played by race and ethnicity in American society, Ethnic Studies provides an important means to examine and contextualize what is happening right now in the United States—and why it is happening. Ethnic Studies explores race and ethnicity as categories of difference and how these categories have they been defined, constructed, and applied in different places and at different times. As a student, you will draw upon many disciplines and areas of thought to question the origin and continuity of race and racism. Through this understanding, students will recognize that progressive change is possible.

Program Length

Ethnic Studies is not a degree granting program at IVC.

Transfer Options

Ethnic Studies is a major taught at most four-years in California, including most UCs and CSUs.
